America wanted to bring Ukraine into Nato which is a military alliance of 30 European and 2 American countries which Russia looked at as a threat near its borders. The US is helping Ukraine to stop Putin’s ambitions of greater Russia. So now there is a greater risk of war getting prolonged, nuclear weapons can also be used in War. Ukraine had a significant Russian ethnic population with 58.3% in Crimea,25.6% percent in Kharkhiv,39% in Luhansk,38.2% in Donetsk, 24.7% in Zaporizhea & 14% in Kherson. Donetsk and Luhansk had a large population who spoke Russian, and Kharkhiv, Zaporzhia, and Odesa also had significant Russian populations who spoke Russian, opposition to Ukraine in these areas was most.
In Feb 2014 Russia first annexed Crimea. Russia accused Ukraine of genocide against Russian speakers in the Donbas region, giving threat of violence or death which Ukraine denied. On 24feb 2022 Russia invaded Ukraine, and elections were conducted in states like Kherson,zaporizhea, Donetsk, and Luhansk which favored Russia. Russia till now has occupied 18% of Ukraine’s territory.
Approximately 8 million Ukrainians had fled the country by April 2023. Till now 31000 Ukranian army personnel have died & Russian military side death toll is 50000(approx). Ukraine’s economy is highly affected due to this Russian-Ukrainian war.
